The main goal of this presentation is to provide insight into how shared decision-making between a surgeon, physical therapist, and patient may be used to optimize clinical care management of patients with Non-Arthritic Hip Disease (NAHD). A brief introduction of this shared decision-making model at Ohio State’s Hip Preservation Clinic will be provided followed by a discussion of best practices in regards to conservative and surgical treatment options and recent outcomes literature. The presenters (physical therapist, hip arthroscopist, and researcher) will consider evidence for posture and movement training and how this may inform treatment decisions.
Our interdisciplinary team will then identify opportunities to implement shared decision-making in an effort to optimize outcomes for individuals with NAHD. Barriers and facilitators to interdisciplinary shared decision-making will be shared from the literature and our ongoing efforts at Ohio State’s Hip Preservation Clinic.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Define NAHD
• Review the recent literature to gain understanding of best practices in conservative and surgical management of NAHD
• Use the evidence to engage patients with NAHD in an informed discussion regarding their outcome expectations and treatment options
• Discuss the importance of a shared decision making model for management of patients with NAHD and improved communication between disciplines at your facility
